Derek Smith

Derek Smith began playing piano at age five but stopped in his early teens, only to pick up the piano again almost a decade later. Although he has pursued a career in chemistry at the University of British Columbia, he has always been able to find time for music.

Derek actively participates in various music festivals in the Lower Mainland, and was a pianist in The Winterreise Project in 2015 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

His musical interests include Romantic and 20th & 21st century works, as well as a strong interest in repertoire written for one hand only. His favourite composers include Alkan, Busoni, Godowsky and Rachmaninov.

Derek currently studies piano with Dr. Corey Hamm.
